Experiments

With this composition, I specifically wanted to capture the graffiti on the wall of this abandoned farm. I could have included the whole scene but I decided to just look at the graffiti, as it intrigue me. I loved looking at this because, it was such a contrast of the graffiti against a farm wall, where there would have been animals being cared for. The juxtaposition of the graffiti and the situation, links well to Human Imprint. This is because the farm is obviously abandoned, so the imprint is the building being neglected, as there is no use for it but also the graffiti on top of this as well, is suggesting that the building now has a different use to create piece of art on the walls. The graffiti artists have left their mark on the wall and now they're leaving their own imprint. I like the simple line drawing of this composition because I think it contradicts the complexity of graffiti itself.  In real life the graffiti is very detailed and I simplified it down to a line drawing.

This was an observation drawing of a old piece of a drain, it was laying on the floor in a mine. I decided to draw the part of the drain because it had once been a vital part of a building and now he has been neglected and damage. This links to Human Imprint because the equipment was needed to be their for a purpose to help the building work at the mine. It is also left as a human imprint because someone has damaged it and it now isn't a functioning piece of equipment but it is still left there.

Here is a composition of a pile of bricks and an abandoned building at mine. I began by drawing the the general shape of the scene and then I decided to go over some lines in biro pen to enhance the lines. Then I added some red biro to enhance other areas. Using the red pen made me want to try cross hatching on the door, which I'm not too confident using. I want to try and get better at cross hatching. As well as biro, I used charcoal to show the textures on the pile of bricks, which worked well because it created a rough texture. Using the charcoal meant I had to set the charcoal with hair spray and this affected the biro, turning it blue. This worked well and added a different effect to human imprint. As I had changed the composition with one simple element. I wanted to refine this piece by adding colour to add even more texture.

I started off this idea by doing a continuous line drawing of my favourite guys standing on a rock platform at the abandoned mine. I wanted to use continuous line because it was a very windy day and the continuous line conveyed the wind through the bushes. I thought this composition was okay but I felt it needed improvement. I started to add colour to the sky as it was beautiful at the time, I used graphic design pens to create the clouds moving across the sky. I also tried to do cross hatching again but felt it was inappropriate use of it. I further decided it to refine the composition more. Like in the previous composition I wanted to use charcoal to add texture to the sky. I think this was successful because the sky looks more darker and effective now. I still used the biro technique and made the biro drip down the page, which is effective because the vertical movement of biro is contrasting to the lines in the sky.

In this composition, I decided to focus on the landscape of the abandoned mine. Using charcoal, was the most effective way of conveying the rough ground and textures within the scene. The trees were simple to complete in charcoal because it required some simple marks to make them effective and scrapping the charcoal straight along the page allowed me to convey the rough ground. I think this composition was successful but more detail could have been added, possibly with biro or pencil.

This composition is refined. At first I did the drawing of Kieran in the tunnel and then I drew the same outcome vertically and horizontally. I think how I have added more lines to the original composition, has worked because it takes the original meaning as its slightly distracting. I like the tonal lines I have made on the floor of the tunnel because it conveys depth and the fact that there was water on the floor. If I was to improve this composition, I should have added more detail to Kieran's body and possibly added more detail to the surroundings.

In this compositions, I drew a part of an abandoned farm. I wanted to capture the graffiti as well. This is because like I've mentioned before the graffiti is a human imprint on top of the human imprint, which is the abandoned building. At first I wanted to do a simple line drawing to grasp drawing with straight lines to creature the structures of building.  Then I  wanted to refine it by adding the concentration to other aspects of the composition. I decided to use the graphic design pens again to highlight certain areas and to add tone to certain areas. I think the second one is better because it is simply more interesting to look at, as there seems to be more going on.

This composition was me trying to understand how graffiti is placed onto walls.  This composition was fun to do because it was easy to grasp onto. My proportions of the building was possibly out. If I was to do this again I would possibly add more colour to make the composition look realistic. I would also add more context to the background, so it wouldn't look so odd.

This composition was made when I was looking at the RBS bank building because it had an interesting structure. I used straight lines to make the structure of the building. I decided to draw it in black biro and then go over it in red biro, to add depth of lines. I think it would have been better if I had worked out the proportions of the building again. I could have also added tone to the composition to make it more complex, as it is quite basic at the moment. I could have also added more context to the piece.

Above is one of my favourite compositions I have done so far, this is because it is simple but also involves a lot of detail about the scene I was looking at. It was inside the power building of the mine, there was a lot broken objects and machinery around but I wanted to capture this moment. This is because through the door you couldn't really see clearly and it was scary because you didn't know what was around the corner. The composition is meant to show how people have destroyed the area around them over time, as it had been abandoned. The first composition I did was on the top right, this was a simplistic line drawing and I just wanted to capture what I could see. I think this was quite effective because is almost looks like a cartoon or something out of a comic, which takes the fear out of how scary it was to draw because it reminds me of children programs. I liked the composition generally but I felt that more could be added in terms of cartoon style. I decided to add a purple/pink theme to another copy of the original composition, I added brief amounts of colours to highlight certain points of interest. I like the marks that I made in the pink one because it looks like the colours are dripping down the wall and this adds the element of fear back into it. I did a similar with the other composition but with brown colours, to make it more realistic. I like these compositions over all but I feel like something is missing from them and I could possibly add different textures to the composition.

I did this composition to help myself grasp how to draw graffiti more accurately with all the shadows in place. I did a simple line drawing as, I felt this was the best way to get to grips of graffiti. It was a close up of the graffiti on the wall because I felt it would be easier than trying to capture the whole wall, it also allowed me to include more detail. I feel like this composition could be better if I added colour onto the sections and shapes but I wanted to keep it simple so I could understand the shadows within graffiti.

This composition was inspired by Zak Smith, who does simple but detailed line drawings and includes cross hatching, when using tone. I found looking at this artist useful when trying to improve my cross hatching, this is because he uses it well and it helped me understand how and where to use it. I also wanted to create a contrast within my composition, so I decided to do two sections filled out in black. I think that my cross hatching could be improved within this composition.

With this composition, I wanted to do a simple line drawing but also create a contrast with abstract lines. I decided to draw a spiral stair case but from the perspective, as if you were laying underneath it. I then added some abstract lines to if, which have no form or pattern. I had done this in one of my previous piece and the contrast was interesting. The black rail that I have done, is very distracting from the rest of the composition, so I wanted to add the abstract lines to balance the piece out. If I was to improve this I would possibly add more detail to the structure of the stair case. Below is the same composition but I decided to represent it in spirals, this was because of Mark Bakema's inspiration. He creates beautiful spiral line drawings, so I wanted to use this idea to represent the spiral stair case. This links the spiral staircase and the artist using spirals. This is a very abstract idea and I think it works well. It is one of my most subtle pieces. I think it could be improved by doing the spirals in more detail and doing it on a larger scale so this can happen.

I went around this composition in a very abstract way, as I was inspired by general building structures, as they are very rigid. This is a drawing of some broken glass on the floor. It had been broken into loads of shapes so I wanted to capture this. To capture the motion that all the pieces are from one bottle, I have done it in continuous line. I think using continuous line was very successful because it suggests it's all link from one actions. I like the abstract sense of this because you wouldn't be able to guess that it's broken glass but it shows human imprint well. I like the simplicity of the composition and the different geometrical shapes within it. The fact that someone broke this glass is a human imprint in itself, because someone decided to smash it and then did so. If I was to improve this, I would possibly add more 3D elements to it, to show a bigger understanding of form.

These two compositions above are of the same view but I have changed the way I portray them both. The one on the left, was a messy quick sketch of the rail at a skate park. To contrast the quick and curvy lines that I had already done, I decided to add some more straighter lines, in continuous line. I did this before in this drawing project and I really liked it, as it creates a strong contrast of line and form. If I was to improve this composition, I would have done the straighter lines with a thicker pen, to make the contrast of different lines even stronger. On the right, I was inspired by Simon Faithful, as he does simple line drawings. I tried to interpret what I was looking at in the most simple way, this was quite difficult. Capturing the most simple elements of the scene was hard but I think it was successful. I felt that the composition could have more context added to it considering how simple it was already. But the fact that it is minimalist gives it a very abstract essence. Both compositions are very different but they are both successful to me.

Refined

This composition is also from the same perspective as the ones above but I was inspired by Rowland Flexner. He does black and white ink drawings, although I didn't do this I took inspiration from the line and form within his compositions.  I created the same structure through line drawing and by drawing the lines very close to each other. I also created darker areas by colouring some of the circles I created in, this was because Flexner had a lot of dark areas and white areas in his composition. This composition looks like the structure of a cell, which is interesting because it is a practical structure which humans have made and used but it has turned out to look like part of a human. If I was to improve this composition I would possibly add more dark tones to it.

I took inspiration from some graffiti I saw on a wall with this composition but I changed the way I looked at it. All the lines that made up the wonderful graffiti were curvy, so I changed all the lines into straight ones. This changed the composition completely because it no longer looks like graffiti, it just looks like a lot of shapes making a pattern. I did some of the lines in pencil and some in pen, I did this to create a contrast between the lines of the composition.. I think this worked well because some sections stand out more than others. I added to this effect by shading in a triangle that I created to really draw the eye into the centre of the composition. The fact that I used pencil and pen in different areas has made it look almost 3D because some areas seem heightened. If I was to improve this composition I would possibly create some tone with pencil.
With this composition I tried to capture a path way for carts at the abandoned mine I went to. I used quick and less perfect lines to create this composition because the texture of the pavement was very rough, so I didn't want to use perfect and smooth lines to create this. I think this composition could be improved by adding more detail and possibly giving it more of a 3D element because it is a very flat drawing. I could possibly add some brown colour to make it more realistic.

With this piece, I was inspired by Eustaquio Carrosco's, who is an artist who does simple line drawings and then does the same drawing slightly to the side of the original composition in a different colour. I took inspiration off him when I was drawing a abandoned piece of equipment from the abandoned mine. I think this works really well with blue, black and red biro because it creates a very trippy effect. It looks like the composition is blurred because of the repetition of the lines. I don't this this method would work as well on curvy lines because the different coloured lines would get muddled. But over all this composition is successful. I think it could be improved if I added more detail from the abandoned equipment.

These four compositions are experiments with colours. I felt like I needed to add colour to my investigation because it has worked in previous compositions but I wanted to try a different way of applying it, rather than just solid chalk. I still decided to use chalk because it's an uncomfortable drawing medium for me. Using chalk allowed me to be more abstract with the marks as it is very hard to add minute detail with chalk. I decided to use chalk in blocks, to represent darkness of areas of a change of light. I think it was successful in the bottom two but it definitely needs more developing because the techniques doesn't look quite complete. I like the bottom right one the most because the composition itself is more abstract and I think that is why it works more because the aspects are complementary.
