Refining Ideas

This was a refinement of a line drawing I did in biro. I like the composition but the human figures that I put in it were too simplistic so I decided to do this again but change it up completely. I applied lines of masking tape on the top half of the black sugar paper and then I decided to use pink, white, purple and blue chalk to create the sky of the composition. When I drew the original composition the sun was setting so in this one I wanted to replicate the colours of the sky but simply. By applying the masking tape it created lines of colours when I took it off. I blended pink and white together which made some really nice pink waves of colour. I also blended the pink and purple chalk together which was very successful. I think the structured lines on it work well because it sets out different layers of the sky, which often occur because of the clouds. The structure below the sky was simple so I decided to represent it in white chalk lines to simply show the structure. I slid the white chalk along the structure to create a rough texture. To improve this composition I could possibly add the figures on Photoshop as I have a photo from when I was drawing this at the abandoned mine.

I think this composition has some strengths but it could also be changed to be improved. This piece is a refinement of a composition I did in my little sketch book. I used the chalk to represent the textures rock pile that was there.  I think the colours were quite complementary but the green stands out quite a lot. I also don't think the orange quite worked because it clashes with the green and pink too much, as the orange is too similar to the pink tones. I think the lines in this composition work well as they're mainly horizontal, which means the lines are all complementary to each other. The wall I have drawn on the white paper, is meant to be different from the rest of the composition and I think this has worked because it stands out. I think it is interesting because it looks unrealistic against the rest of the composition and it almost looks like a glitch. As I have gone over the lines of the bricks of the wall it makes it look even more like a glitch. I think I could have possibly added less colour to the bottom half and maybe not have used a white wall because it looks quite harsh against the black.

In this composition, I took inspiration from my previous piece above. With the chalk lines I took a photo of them and put them in to Photoshop and then over layed them onto this photo above. I then changed the opacity of the strip of colour which meant I could overlay them. I didn't plan a pattern to overlay them so I just went a bit wild on the pattern I created. I want to further experiment with positions to put the coloured strip in. I love this composition because the blue of the photo and the faint pink and black contrast really well together. The straight lines of the container and the straight lines of the chalk both have straight lines in their form, which is why I think the strips of chalk colour work so well. Also the lines on the container are very formulaic, whereas the lines of chalk are a bit more abstract so the lines are contrasting each other.
